Research Abstract |
To understand the characteristics of the marine sediments distributing around the Japanese Islands,we have been studying on the following items; 1;Geology of land area; Geologic survey on land which is the source of the terrigenous and volcanogenic materials were carried out for the Tsushima, Seven Izu Islands, Yap Islands and Otsuchi area. 2; Marine geology; Marine geologic surveys were carried out in order to understand the distribution of the submarine sediments by R/V Hakuho Maru,TanseiMaru and Yayoi for the Mikura and Hachijyo Basins, around Yap Islands, Sabami Bay and Otsuchi Bay. The characteristics of the marine sediments distributing around the Japanese Islands are the complex mixtures of Terrigenous,Volcanogenic, Biogenic,Authinenic and Eolian materials. Three major components, Terrigenous (T),Volcanogenic (V) and Biogenic (B) are fundermentally significant for the understanding of the origin of the sedimentary basins around the arc-trench regions. It is clarified that the ratio T/V/B can be the basic indicator for discriminating the marine sediments and the sedimentary basins.
