Research Abstract |
The aim of this research is to study all the materials on Heikyoku's oral traditions, that is, both teaching manuals of Heikyoku and documents of Toudou (an association of blind players). I would like to report the following as the outcome of this research project. Research done during the two-year period: 1) Of the whole materials concerning this subject, about two-thirds were studied either by inspecting the originals or by having them copied. 2) Toudou Youshuu is the most central document among the many Toudou materials. I published the most authentic version of this text for the first time, and in another paper presented a new interpretation on its significance. 3) I also published a paper on the most central documents in Heikyoku's oral tradition: Heike Kanmon Roku, Toudou Youshuu, Saikai Yoteki Shuu, and Tuizou Heigo Guudan. There I have ascertained their historical significances and their interrelationships. Desiderata left for future research: 1) An re-examination of Heike Kanmon Roku. 2) An examination of Heikyoku Mondou Sho. 3) An examination of the relationship between Toudou Dai Kiroku on one hand and Toudou Youshuu, Ko Shikimoku, and Shin Sikimoku on the other. 4) A further examination of Heikyoku oral traditions, using many handwritten notes in various Heikyoku scores. 5) An examination of Heikyoku-related passages in the materials concerning Gagaku.
