Research Abstract

Joseph cells, lamellated cells and Hesse organs which have assumed to function as photoreceptors in amphioxus were studies electronmicroscopically. A histofluorescence method to show the presence of retinal was also used.
Joseph and Hesse cells are both composed of microvilli at periphery, cell body and an axon. Hesse cells are lined in addition by a pigment cell. By dark adaptation, microvilli of both cells increase in number and become slender and more regulary arranged. The fluorescence specific for retinal is induced at the site where the microvilli of Joseph and Hese cells are located.
Each lamellated cell is provided with lamellae which are originated from the sheath of cilium with 9+0 axonemes, cell body and an axon. These cells did not change in ultrastructure upon light treatment, nor did they show the fluorescence specific for retinal. This does not necessarily disprove, however, the photoreceptive function of lamellated cells.
