Research Abstract |
LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON TRANSMISSION SPECTROMETER WAS CONSTRUCTED IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE CONDUCTION BANDS OF ORGANIC THIN FILMS. THE GROUND STATE ENERGY OF THE QUASI-FREE ELECTRON Vo (MINUS OF THE ELECTRON AFFINITY E_A) IN CRYSTALLINE LONG-CHAIN ALKANES WAS DETERMINED TO BE 0.5 <plus-minus>0.1 eV. THE VALUE FOR THE MOLTEN STATE WAS FOUND TO BE NEGATIVE. FURTHER IN THE CRYSTALLINE STATE, EVIDENCE WAS FOUND FOR A DIRECT CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION MAXIMA AND THE HIGH VALUE OF THE DENSITY OF STATES IN THE CONDUCTION BANDS. On THE OTHER HAND,THE E_A's OF POLYSTYRENE, POLY(2-VINYLPYRIDINE), POLY(2-VINYLNAPHTHALENE) AND POLY(N-VINYLCARBAZOLE) WERE DETERMINED TO BE 0.4 eV, 0.3 eV, 0.6 eV and 1.8 eV, respectively.
