Research Abstract |
By studying the turnover catalytic system of alcohol oxidation by employing an oxidation-active flavin mimic(Benzo-dipteridine, BDP), the following results were obtained in the steps (a), (b) and (c).(1) The oxidation of alcohol by oxoamitium ion[step (a)] proceeds in orgatic solvents such as CH_2Cl_2 and t-BuOH. (2) The oxidation of the N-hydroxylamine by BDP[step (b)] occurs in both organic and aqueous solvents. The pH-rate profile shows that the optimum pH would be larger than 7. (3) The oxidation of BDPH^- by O_2[step (c)] is quite slow in the organic solvents, requiring proton source, while fast in aqueous and CH_2Cl_2-H_2O media. When benzyl alcohol is used as the substrate in CH_2Cl_2 -H_2O(pH 8.9) in the presence of catalytic amounts of BDP and the N-OH, benzaldehyde is obtained in more than 5,000 % based on BDP, indicating that the catalytic cycle functions as expected.
