Research Abstract |
SPECIMENS WERE COLLECTED FROM 126 HUMAN JAWS OBTAINED AT AUTOPSY. DECALCIFIED SECTIONS AND UNDECALCIFIED THIN GROUND SECTIONS WERE STUDIED BY LIGHT MICROSCOPY, CONTACT MICRORADIOGRAPHY, ACOUSTIC MICROSCOPY AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. 1. HEALTHY ALVEOLAR CRESTS WERE COVERED BY SUPRACRESTAL FIBERS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO PREPARE AND VISUALIZE COLLAGEN-FREE CRESTAL BONE, 2. THE INCIPIENT STAGE OF THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ALVEOLAR CRESTAL BONE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A LOOSENING OF THE SUPRACRESTAL FIBERS. 3. IN ACTIVE STAGE, BONE SURFACES FREE OF SUPRACRESTAL FIBERS WERE EASILY PREPARED FROM THE ACTIVE INFLAMMATORY LESION. THESE DENUDED BONE SURFACES WERE CHARACTERIZED BY NUMEROUS HOWSHIP'S LACUNAE. 4. IN ADVANCED STAGE, TYPE III COLLAGEN PREDOMINATED IN THE GRANULATION TISSUE OF THE DESTRUCTIVE ALVEOLAR BONE, WHILE TYPE I COLLAGEN PREDOMINATED WHEN HEALING WAS COMPLETE. VARIED CONDITIONS OF THE DECALCIFIED ALVEOLAR BONE MATRIX WERE SHOWN FROM AN ELASTOKINETIC VIEWPOINT. 5. IN RESTING STAGE AND REGENERATIVE STAGE, THE ALVEOLAR CREST HAD A HONEYCOMB APPEARANCE WITH A COVERING PLEXUS OF COLLAGEN FIBERS AND MINERALIZED-LIKE COLLAGEN MATRIX. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE DESTRUCTION OF SUPRACRESTAL FIBERS WAS IMPORTANT IN THE PROCESS OF THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ALVEOLAR CRESTAL BONE WHICH PROCEEDED BY OSTEOCLASTIC RESORPTION. 6. FURTHERMORE 70 HEALTHY AND DISEASED PERIODONTAL SEGMENTS WERE MORPHOMETRICALLY EXAMINED. CLOSE CORRELATIONS WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE INCREASE IN THE HISTOLOGICAL DEGREE OF MARGINAL PERIODONTITIS AND :(1)THE ENHANCED ALVEOLAR CRESTAL BONE DESTRUCTION;(2) THE INCREASE IN JUNCTIONAL EPITHELIAL PROLIFERATION;(3) THE RETRACTION OF THE INTERDENTAL COL. STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALVEOLAR CRESTAL BONE DESTRUCTION AND JUNCTIONAL EPITHELIAL PROLIFERATION CAN BE OBSERVED.
