Research Abstract

Nagasaki University and National University of Singapore collaborated for pathological and epidemiological analysis on cancer and refractory viral diseases in Nagasaki and Singapore. As viral diseases, hepatits B virus (HBV), human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and their related diseases were investigated. Epidemiological analysis on HBV infection particularly on incidence of viral carriers, and pathological analysis of hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer were conducted in both areas. Nagasaki is relatively endemic HTLV-1 infection whereas HTLV-1 infection is very rare in Singapore. Epidemiological and geographycal difference in both areas were discussed. In Nagasaki, detailed analysis on HTLV-1 carriers and virus related diseases such as adult T cell leukemia and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy was performed. HIV was also found relatively rare in both areas. Effective diagnosis and prevention of viral infection, however, is still an important subject for both areas and the technical basis for early detection of HIV carriers was discussed. Various types of malignancy are subjects of great interest for both areas. Biological, pathological and clinical analyses were performed in stomach cancer, gynecological cancer, malignant lymphoma and leukemia.
