Research Abstract |
THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNCONSCIOUS OCCLUSAL TOOTH CONTACTS AND MYOFASCIAL PAIN. L35 PATIENTS WERE USED IN MUSCLE PALPATION TESTS WHICH WERE PERFORMED ACCORDING TO THE KROGH-POULSEN'S PALPATION SYSTEM. THE MUSCLES, IN WHICH THE PATIENTS COMPLAINED PAIN OR UNPLEASANTNESS WHEN PALPATED, WERE RECORDED. OTHER 8 ( 4 NORMAL AND 4 TMJ DYSFUNCTIONED ) SUBJECTS WERE USED IN OCCLUSAL TOOTH CONTACTS TEST. IN ORDER TO EXAMINE OCCLUSAL TOOTH CONTACTS IN THE HABITUAL OCCLUSAL POSITION, A RADIOTELEMETRY SYSTEM WITH A SMALL TRANSMITTER, BATTERIES AND A SWITCH WAS USED. THE SWITCH WORKS AROUND THE AREA OF CIRCLE WITH DIAMETER OF 100 M FROM THE POINT OF HABITUAL OCCLUSAL POSITION. THE ANALOGUE SIGNALS WHICH APPEAR ONLY WHEN UPPER AND LOWER TEETH TOUCH TOGETHER IN THE HABITUAL OCCLUSAL POSITION WERE STORED IN A VIDEO CASETTE TAPE. THEN THE SIGNALS ON THE TAPE WERE CONVERTED INTO DIGITAL DATA BY A A/D CONVERTER AND THE FREQUENCY AND THE DURATION OF THE OCCLUSAL TOOTH CONTACTS WERE CALCULATED WITH A PERSONAL COMPUTER. THE RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS: 1. IN CASE WITH UNILATERAL PAINED PATIENTS, THERE WERE STATISTICALLY MEANINGFUL CORRELATION BETWEEN UPPER AND LOWER STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID MUSCLES, INSERTION OF TEMPORAL MUSCLE AND INTERNAL PTERYGOIDMUSCLE, PROFOUND AND SHALLOW PARTS OF MASSETER MUSCLES, ANTERIOR PART OF TEMPORAL MUSCLE AND PROFOUND PART OF MASSETER MUSCLE, AND UPPER PART OF STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID MUSCLE AND LATERAL PTERYGOID MUSCLE. 2. THE FREQUENCY AND THE DURATION OF TOOTH CONTACTS IN TMJ DYSFUNCTIONED PATIENTS WERE REMARKABLY GREATER THAN THOSE IN THE NORMAL SUBJECTS.
