Research Abstract |
The strucutres of major tetraether types of lipids in the methanogen methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum were elucidated. The systematic names of these lipids were caldarchaeol, gentiobiosyl caldarchaeol, caldarchaetidyl-X and gentiobiosyl caldarchaetidyl-X (X=ethanol-amine, L-serine and myo-inositol). These lipids were classifies in three (ethanolamine, serins and inositol) groups of quartets, each of which is composed of neutral lipids, glycolipids, phospolipid and phosphoglycolipid. The structural features of the quartet provided useful clues for elucidation and understanding of the complexity of lipid pattern of this organism and biosynthetic hypothesis. The quartet concept was extended to a heptad concept by the addition of the results of structural analysis of diether polar lipids.
