Research Abstract |
THE MAJOR COMPONENT OF MAMMALIAN AND AVIAN SKIN COLLAGENS IS IDENTIFIED AS TYPE I WHICH COMPRISES ( 1)_2 2 HETEROTRIMERS. THE SKIN TYPE I COLLAGENS OF MANY TELEOSTS , HOWEVER, WERE PREVIOUSLY SHOWN TO CONTAIN THE THIRD CHAIN, 3, AND TO EXIST AS 1 2 3 HETEROTRIMERS. IN THIS STUDY, THE SOLUBLE SKIN TYPE I COLLAGENS OF BONYFISH WERE ISOLATED FROM NON-TELEOSTEAN FISH SUCH AS LUNGFISH, LONGNOSE GAR AND STURGEONS AND WERE CHARACTERIZED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR SUBUNIT COMPOSITION. WHEN EXAMINED BY SDS-POLYACRYLAMIDE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS, THESE TYPE I COLLAGENS SEEMED TO CONSIST OF ONLY TWO DISTINCT CHAINS, 1 and 2. HOWEVER, THE COLLAGENS OF STURGEONS WERE FOUND BY CM-CELLULOSE CHROMATOGRAPHY OF THE DENATURED COLLAGENS TO CONTAIN A 3 CHAIN AND TO EXIST AS 1 2 3 HETEROTRIMERS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE COLLAGENS OF LUNGFISH AND LONGNOSE GAR LACKED 3 AND EXISTED AS ( 1)_2 2 HETEROTRIMERS. FROM THESE RESULTS, THE SKIN TYPE I COLLAGENS HAVING SUBUNIT COMPOSITION OF 1 2 3 were FOUND TO BE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED IN BONYFISH INCLUDING TELEOSTEAN AND NON-TELEOSTEAN SPECIES. THE STRUCTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF 3 IN FISH SKIN TYPE I COLLAGEN REMAINS TO BE SOLVED.
