Research Abstract

Objectives: This project aims to develope a new 3D TV system, which records 3D objects in ordinary circumstances and diplays the 3D images in real-time being seen without glasses in a viewing zone.
Results: 1) The geometrical characteristics and advantages of lens-plate 3D images are clarified. A new optic, which performs focusing of the camera eyes and adjusting the driections of the eyes simultaneously, is experimentally confirmed. Optical magnification/reduction of viewing zone width are done with a configuration of large-aperture lens system.
2) A relay-lens plate, which consists of vertical-grid-type masks and a lenticular sheet, is newly devised. Resolution, brightness and vertical height of the viewing zone are greately improved.
3) A method to eliminate large-capacity memories in editting 3D video signal having precisely interleaved parallax images, which should be in registration with a lenticular sheet, is newly devised.
4) A camera system, which records 8 parallax images simultaneously with 8 CCD camera devices and edits them into a 3D video signal, is newly developed. Combining with the high resolution Braun tube with beam-indexes, 3D images of 290mm x 220mm size in the horizontal and vertical directions and of 300mm in the depth are successfully Recorded and displayed in real-time. resoultions are 250 lines in both horizontal and vertical direction and 1.6% of distance of view in the depth. 3D images are refreshed in 1/60 sec. Flikerless 3D images with clear parallax are seen by the naked eye in 300mm viewing-zone width at 1000mm distance in front of the Braun tube.
An autostereoscopic 3D TV with practical resolution and viewing zone was eemonstrated for the first time.
