Research Abstract |
This study aims at conducting a basic survey to examine the formation and development as well as the present condition of the Ho Islam society in Northern Thailand. The term, Ho, supposedly was a Thai word by which the Thai people called the Chinese Muslims who migrated from Yunnan to Northern Thailand via Barma. But at the present day, the term, Ho, means the Chinese in general who migrated to Northern Thailand from Yunnan by land. For example, the Chinese refugees and Kuomintang army who escaped from the chaos of the Chinese Revolution and migrated into Northern Thailand in about 1949 are also called Ho. However, evidence that the early Ho community was comprised of the Muslims suggests that the core of Ho was Muslims. The early Muslim community was eatablished in the early 20th century which was located around Ban Ho Ching Cheng Suu (*****, Masjid Hidayatullah). Prior to the formation of Ban Ho, there were Ho living at the northern side of the Chang Puak Gate. Their commercial activities had developed and their river trade using the Ping River and trade with Lamphun had become prosperous. Moreover, the Ho came to be connected to the postal delivery service of Royal Thailand, so they moved from Chang Puak area to Wiang Ping, that is Ban Ho, for it was more convenient for them. Since then the Chinese Muslim community has developed, and the prominent figure among them is Cheng Sun-lin (***). From the above mentioned evidence, it becomes apparent that the commercial and trade activities of the Ho were the major reason of the formation and development of Ho Islam society. A further investigation should take place concerning the various aspects of present condition and historical development of Ho Islam society.
