Research Abstract |
This is an interdisciplinary study of ethnic minority groups in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in China. The research team consists of seven different disciplines, namely, comparative education, archeology, cultural anthropology, dental anthropology, physiological anthropology, forage science, and Mongolian history. The purpose of the project is to clarify and understand the way of life of the minority peoples including the Uygurs, the Kazaks, and the Xibes and also to examine their physiological conditions. There has not been done much research concerning these peoples. This is a three-year-project from 1987 to 1989. In 1986 two member of the team visited Xinjiang Nomal University in Urumqi asking for the cooperative research, and both Kyushu University and Xinjiang Normal University has come to an agreement for scientific and educational exchange. The first year (1987-88) was for preliminary research and the research team visited some parts of the region for the selection of the research sites. In the second year (1988-89), full scale research was done about 50 days in Urumqi, Kasi, Ili and other places with the hepl of Xinjiang Normal University, Xinjian Medical College, Xinjiang Agricultural College, other institutes, and individuals. In the third year (1989-90), three research members of Xinjiang Normal University were invited to Kyushu University for discussions and exchange of opinions. In the final year, the reports by all participlants from Kyushu University, which will be edited by Yoshio Gondo, the head of the project, and published by the Asahi Shinbunsha. A Series of lectures for the public has been given every Saturday for ten weeks in 1989 at Fukuoka. Through this research, many aspects of the minority peoples in north-western China has been found. After three years of the research, a new project planned to be carried on for another three years as an extension of the current research.
