Research Abstract |
As a result of the internationalization of scientific research, the National Center for Science Information System (NACSIS) has also recognized the necessity of carrying out international projects in cooperation with overseas organization. Therefore, the international joint research based on "Monbusho International Scientific Research Program" was started between the NACSIS and the National Science Foundation (NSF), U. S. A.. The joint research started in 1988, based upon informal agreement between Mr. Eric Bloch, Director of the NSF and Dr. Hiroshi Inose, head investigator of the research and Director General of the NACSIS. The joint research is being carried out on two themes. The first one is to provide database services developed by the NACSIS to U. S. researchers. The second is to connect the "Science Information Network" operated by the NACSIS directly to the U. S. network and to review a networking operations. For the first one, the use of NACSIS's database through terminals insta

lled at NSF successfully started in January 1989. Trial service for database access was made by NACSIS during joint research, while the NSF arranged a retriever service to respond to U. S. researcher's requests. Since August 1990, the range of request acceptance has been expanded, so that the usage has greatly increased. The said trial was started with recognition that the information flow from U. S. to Japan was overwhelming, and a correcton of this trend was desperately needed. The NACSIS wanted to supply a database prepared by itself to U. S. to know the real situation of use of the said database by U. S. researchers, and to get proper opinions from U. S. researchers. At present, trial service is being offered for "Academic Conference Records", "Thesis for Doctorial Degrees", "Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research", etc.. Among these services, the use of the database of "Academic Conference Records" has increased. From 1989, the scope of database services has widened, and a terminal has been installed even in the Library of Congress (LC) for offering same trial service. Interconnection of the networks was partially started in January 1989. Originally, the electric mail connection to CSNET was started through the workstation installed at the NSF by the NACSIS. Thereafter, with the cooperation of George Washington University, mail connection to Bitnet was realized. Moreover, a mutual connection between CSNET/Bitnet and mail by domestic MHS was made possibile through NACSIS's mail system at Tokyo. Operation of these is still being performed under the joint research program, and a review is being made on the new connection between U. S. Internet and Japanese Internet on "Science Information Network". The oporation will be started in 1991, and a domestic and international communication environment using TCP/IP will be created. Having these results, the research was concluded in March 1991 by conducting final discussions at Washington D. C.. Less
