Research Abstract |
The aim of this cooperative research is to study the air-sea interaction including the wind-wave dynamics and the related microwave backscattering mechanism. The microwave backscattering at the ocean surface is important for the satellite remote sensing of the ocean. The Tohoku group has a large wind-wave tunnel and has been investigating basic researches associated with the aim. The Sydney group has ocean platforms for the wind-wave observation in the Bass strait. In each of the three years, one of the members of both the group has visited the other group, and has proceeded the cooperative research. The results of research is summarized as follows ; 1) Four considerable results associated with the wind waves and the air boundary layer have been obtained. They were all submitted to journals, and two of them were published. The titles of the four papers are ; a) the response of wind-wave spectra to changing winds, b) wave dependence of sea-surface wind stress, c) stress fluctuations over ocean waves, d) the steepens and shape of wind waves. 2) Microwave radar experiments has been done by both of the group. The results are now being refined to be published. 3) A preliminary study is made for combining the satellite altimeter and IR-images of NOAA to investigate the large scale oceanic motions. 4) A scheme for visiting each other and staying has been formed through these three years. This is useful for future collaborations.
