Research Abstract |
The Joint Research Reactor between the Ohio State University in U. S. A. and Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy of the first stage (Fiscal 1988-1990) has been completed. Total 11 researchers, 6 Japanese and 5 Americans, were exchanged for information exchange through seminars, discussions and so on. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a new clinical method to treat tumors selectively by using neutrons from a nuclear research reactor. Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI) has an advantage in developing neutron fields for biomedicine. On the other hand the Ohio State University (OSU) has that in boron compound. Both research fields are essential for BNCT. This joint research program is based on a very typical give-and-take relation. Through the 3 year program, both KURRI and OSU have been obtained big benefits mutually. For example, research activities of physics group in OSU and chemistry group in KURRI have stimulated very much. Many paper have been published from both sides during this program. Both KURRI and OSU have a strong intention of the continuation of this joint research program.
