| Research Abstract |
We have collected a series of attribute data, have mapped it by the use of computer and then have analyzed it mainly focusing on characteristics of traditional life space units and their changes from various viewpoints of the members of this project.
Specifically, the following themes are carried out: 1. examination of physical conditions such as topography and soil and spatial distribution of archaeological remains; 2. historical analysis of political territories as well as life space units found before the period of high economic growth; 3 study of rural settlements, whose area usually correspond to the traditional units; 4. computermapping of attributes of the spatial units such as Oaza and Koaza; 5. input, analysis and mapping of census tract data; and finally, building of a new Geographic Information System (GIS) of Nara Prefecture as an integration of those five themes.
GIS had been developed in North America and Europe, and utilized for the purpose of business efficiency by local and national governments in Japan. Our concern is, first, building of a novel system adapted well to Japanese situation, keeping in mind a possibility of generalization of changing areal units, and, second, a search for an ideal system, which makes sense geographically and is also useful as a geographical tool. Hereafter, we would like to resolve a number of issues occurred during our investigation, and to extend the current system to other prefectures and finally to whole Japan.
