Research Abstract |
The main theme of our research is the following : (1) construction of an optimum intra-university network in an academic environment (2) construction of an internetwork connecting the intra-university networks. On the performance characteristics of inter-university networks, we have investigated and evaluated some problems thoroughly. It is shown to be most important that active network users cooperate to develop advanced network applications. The environment of the multi-media communication towards this end is actually installed. Furthermore, on the second part of theme, we have examined the following problems : 1) routing algorithm under the X. 25 packet switching network 2) development of a router-program for 1) 3) experiment with this program in the internetworking environment 4) a study on management of internetworks 5) a study on interconnection between TCP/IP and OSI networks. In the first phase, we constructed the internetwork among seven largeーscale computer centers and NACSIS, and established its smooth operation. This internetwork is referred to as JAIN (Japan Academic Inter-university network). In the next phase, a large number of intraーuniversity networks have been connected. Now it is anticipated in JAIN that this network will be expanded widely and will support several research projects in Japan.
