Research Abstract |
This study analyzed about the city problem and the method of the measure in several cities of Southeast Asia. The report studies the possibility of an integrated physical, social, economic and cultural planning approach to the development and conservation of the inner city area, and found it suitable to the local situation. In execution of this approach, a strong coordination policy among governmental, non-governmental agencies concerned, a strategy for the institutional arrangement, and active popular participation are required. The report stresses on the educational promotion which is a must policy in every respect for improvement of the quality of life. Human value and self-discipline are important aspects to be promoted in the society at large and to be on a campaign prior to the implementation of other programs in any problem areas. The study also evaluates the urban planning policies, and recommends appropriate urban management tools -- zoning, building control, and preservation historic residential district as well as the districts with preferable living environment. Recommendations for evaluating alternative approaches to development and conservation which may arise in the course of policy and strategy formulation are considered in the study.
