| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of malocclusion in progression of periodontal disease. Results were as follows; I. Biological studies of occlusal trauma: The active substance extracted from the periodontal tissue which was affected by traumatic occlusion made polynuclearleucocytes reduce the function of phagocytosis in experimental study of rabbits. In rats, traumatic occlusion caused enlargement of intercellular space of junctional epithelium. A new collagen membrane and Bone Morphorgic Protein were developed for treatment of vertical bony defects. II. The studies of physiological and non-physiological jaw movement: First molars had important role of occlusal guidance at working side of chewing cycle. The persons with premature contacts had long initial tooth-contact-time at tapping. Jaw movements were often observed in REM and stage II sleep and seldom in stage I sleep. III. Diagnosis and treatment: The slow down of speed at the end of jaw close movement was observed in periodontal patients by K6 system. Prolonged duration of occlusal sound was observed in periodontal patients with mobile teeth. After periodontal treatment the duration became short. By the image-analizing system it was demonstrated that occlusal adjustment decreased irregular tooth contact area. Making an artificial guide plane on the lingual surface of canine was effective for the treatment of occlusal trauma in molars. A new device developed for recording muscle activity and tooth contact during sleep at home was useful for objective diagnosis of bruxism.
