Research Abstract |
This research has aimed at rethinking the common opinion that Shakespeare was a sort of anti-democratic dramatist with the established ideology, and also at clarifying that the power of shakespearean drama engenders chiefly from dramatic representation of the dynamics between the senses of value of kings and nobles, and those of the people. My study started with considering some popular characters in Shakespeare's plays, notably servants, clowns, fools and women, for example, Jack Cade in Henry VI, Bottom and Puck in A Midsummer-Night's Dream, and Autolycus in The Winter's Tale, as well as particular heroes who, in spite of their high ranks, represent, even in part, the popular points of view and criticize the courtly senses of value, whose best example is considered to be Hamlet. Next followed the investigation into popular culture and popular theater, and also lives, customs, and ways of thinking of the people in the 16-17 c English Society. It was in order to study how Shakespeare's dramatic world is based upon "the popular" . The last stage of my research was to consider what is the essence of the impact of shakespearean drama not only upon his contemporary common audience but also upon the modern audience.
