Research Abstract

For elucidation of lymphocyte release into the lymph, the lymphatics and their wall in the splenic white pulp and intestinal lymph nodules were examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. 1. Lymphatic capillaries were observed to be accompanied with pulp arteries in the human and monkey spleen. The wall of capillaries was a thin layer of endothelial cytoplasm, through which lymphocytes and large wondering cells in the reticular space extend their processes.
2. The lining wall of lymphatic sinus surrounding intestinal lymph nodules was (1) composed of a thin cytoplasmic layer of endothelial cells and a fibrillated layer with pores, in which wondering cells existed, and (2) associated with contractile elements, such as elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells, which were disseminated in the vicinity of nodules or fasciculated in the connective tissue. Nerve terminals with cored vesicles were also observed. Intraepithelial occurrence of thread-like basement membranes was observed in the internodular mucosa lining the epithelial fovea on the lymph nodule in the rabbit caecum.
