Research Abstract

With increasing demand of applications of welding into many processes of production from even small parts to heavy duty machines and constructions, such as LSI circuits, huge bridges, ships, ocean and/or space equipments, electrical resistance welding (i. e., Spot welding) has become useful, and provides various processes of the production with its technological simplicity and economical advantage.
The resistance pressure welding has been widely studied theoretically and experimentally. Some studies are using material such as metal powder media and thin sheet metals between a pair of solid specimens.
A tentative experimental study on solid-state welding was performed under atmospheric conditions for basic data and the results were examined to see if the method was applicable, by using metal powder medium which was filled in the space between the two main bodies of specimen bars (i. e., base metal), and was compressed longitu dinally and current was conducted simultaneously to generate Jo … More ule thermal heat. The principal objective of the experimental study was to obtain basic data for investigation of the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the welding.
The authors reported that the experimental data obtained were compared with those of the base metal bars, in terms of the tensile, impact, U shape bending tests, the macro and micro structural observation was also made by microscopes and SEM.
The material used in this study was pure copper cylindrical bars and aluminum bars for solid specimens and the powder medium were electro-dendritic type copper powder of 200 mesh, aluminum powder of 150 mesh and nickel powder of 150 mesh. Some of the mechanical and metallurgical properties were studied by examining the macro and micro structures of the weld joint section and the fractograph of the tensile fracture. In particular, the experimental data obtained were compared with those of the base metal bars, and it was found that the strength of the joint reached approximately that of the base metal. Less
