Research Abstract |
In the field of cardiology, echocardiography, as a noninvasive and handy method, is widely used for observing the motion of the heart. But usually it is used only rough observation of the motion of the left ventricle or other parts of the heart. Only a few quantitative analyses by using a computer system have been done in the field of cardiology. The main purpose of this research was to develop an image processing system of echocardiograms which is usable in clinical fields. The system is built of a conventional personal computer system (PC) and a memory box for echo-data storage connected to the computer through the system bus of PC. The operation of the system by a medical doctor is done by choosing a task on an appropriate menu which is selected by the computer according to the situation. The system can perform the following tasks; 1) digitize echo signal and save them in the frame memory box directly from the echocardiographic device or from a video tape recorder through a video tape, 2) detect the shapes of the left ventricle in a cardiac cycle, 3) calculate various parameters for the cardiac function and 4) display the results of cardiac function. The necessity of the data. processing of echocardiograms especially in the field of clinical applications will increase more and more in recent future. The system developed in this research is compact and easy to handle. The system should be improved in software through the feedback from the clinical fields. Moreover, the development of a system in more compact size, such as a one-board interface card for a personal computer, is the urgent problem for clinical use in a wide area.
