Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During FY2022 we combined in vivo physiological recordings and optogenetic manipulation of CA2 transmission during social memory behavioral paradigms. Our results found both enhancement and impairments in encoding of social identity with inhibition and stimulation of specific CA2 outputs respectively. On the level of physiology we observed changes in the power of theta band oscillations in the CA1 region of the hippocampus that corresponded to the changes in behavior that we observed. Namely, impaired encoding of social memory was correlated with a decrease in theta power during the session and enhanced encoding of social memory was correlated with an increase in the power of the theta band oscillation. Currently we are extending the analyses of these data to look at single unit activity both in CA1 and CA2 during this behavioral paradigm, as well as conducting additional experiments using in vivo imaging with sensors designed to be sensitive to the extracellular concentration of specific neuromodulators. We are excited about these results will continue these experiments in the future to test the hypothesis this is mediated through slow-time scale changes in the power of the theta oscillation.
