Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The mass detection of S8 was achieved in collaboration with the Akaike group. The supramolecular coordination capsule was found to have good cell penetration abilities. Inside the cell, the capsule encapsulated S8 and the thus stabilized S8 was detected via MS analysis. This strategy was also utilized for the quantification of S8 within cells. The results furthermore indicate that S8 serves an important role within cells for redox processes. This discovery might lead to the development of supersulfide medicines.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The supramolecular capsule displayed unexpectedly well cell-membrane permeability and bound S8 within the complex cell environment. The MS analysis indicated a significant concentration of S8 within cells. The preparation of new coordination capsules for binding of other (smaller or larger than S8) supersulfide species is also proceeding smoothly.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Besides MS analysis, we are planning the fluorescence analysis of S8 using our supramolecular capsule tool. For this we will utilize a fluorophore replacement essay. Both fluorescence Turn-ON and Turn-OFF sensing will be targeted. We also plan the synthesis of S8-binding supramolecular capsules with higher water-solubility. Internally functionalized capsules are also planned.
