圧力と磁場によって創出されるイッテルビウム化合物の重い電子状態の研究

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究ではYb化合物が示す重い電子状態や新奇な電子状態を明らかにするため、純良単結晶を育成し、高圧、低温、強磁場下で物性測定を行った。以下に本研究で得た知見を挙げる。
1) 2価に近い電子状態のYbCu2Ge2は加圧下で電子の有効質量が増大することを見いだした。またx線吸収、および回折実験により、Ybの価数、体積の圧力依存性を評価し、価数が2.8価を超える10 GPa辺りから有効質量が急激に増大することを明らかにした。
2) 重い電子系YbT2Zn20 (T: Rh, Ir)のx線吸収実験を行い、ほぼ3価に近かったYbの価数が低温で有意に減少することがわかった。この変化はそれぞれの物質の熱膨張測定の結果から推定される価数の変化とも一致しており、価数の変化率は近藤温度TK付近最も大きくなることが分かった.これらはYb化合物が重い電子系に変化する際に結晶の膨張を伴うことを表す典型例だと考えられる。
3) 重い電子系YbCo2Zn20の強磁場下における電気抵抗測定から、H || [111] で現れる磁場誘起反強四極子秩序(FI-AFQ)相の相図を明らかにした。また中性子散乱実験を行い磁場誘起相や結晶場状態に関する知見を得た。さらにYbCo2Zn20のFI-AFQ相と重い電子によるメタ磁性の圧力効果をより詳細に調べ、臨界圧である1.8 GPa付近でメタ磁性による異常が観測されなくなり、2.2 GPa以上で圧力誘起反強磁性(AFM)が観測された。5 GPa 付近まではAFM相はFI-AFQ相と共存していることがわかった。
以上のように、圧力はYbの電子状態をコントロールし新奇な状態を生み出す有効な手段であることがわかった。本研究を進める間に育成され新しいYb化合物もいくつかあり、今後も世界初のYb化合物の圧力誘起超伝導体の探索を継続して行なう予定である。
