Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、マグネターと呼ばれる強磁場中性子星の正体を研究している。昨年度は宇宙Ｘ線衛星「すざく」により2009年に観測された、マグネター4U 0142+61 のデータを精査し、周期8.6秒の自転に伴う硬X線パルスの到着時刻が、15時間の周期で0.7秒ほど早まったり遅れたりする現象（位相変調）を世界で初めて発見した。これは、このマグネターが球対称からわずかに変形し、結果として剛体の自由歳差運動が発生し、自転周期と歳差周期の「うなり」が15時間に現れたものと解釈される。この変形量は1/6300と推定され、それは星内部に潜む10の16乗に達する強烈なトロイダル磁場のためと解釈された。
本年度はこの成果を、２つの面から大きく強化した。その１つは、「すざく」が2011年と2013年に得た4U 0142+61 の追観測データを解析した結果、15時間の位相変調が再確認できたことである。これにより初年度に発見した位相変調が、一過性の現象であったり、雑音のいたずらである可能性を、大幅に低減することに成功した。さらに変調の振幅が、年のオーダーで変化することも明らかになった。これは自由歳差運動の「首振り角」の変化ではなく、硬X線の放射パターンの変化と解釈される。以上の成果に基づき2014年6月2日、記者発表（掲載依頼）を行った。
第２には、別のマグネター 1E 1547-5408から同じ現象の検出に成功したことである。この天体の場合、パルス周期は 2.07秒、変調周期は10時間、変調振幅は0.5秒で、示唆される変形量は1/17400 であった。この現象も、内部磁場でマグネターが変形し、それに伴い自由歳差運動が起き、それと自転との「うなり」が見えていると解釈できる。これにより当該現象がマグネターで普遍的に見られる可能性が高まった。これは中性子星の理解にとってきわめて大きな成果であると自負する。
