我々は金属基板表面を反応場とする、新しい触媒の開発研究を行っている。そして、この一連の研究を通じて、「金基板をピラニア溶液（硫酸と過酸化水素水の混合液）で処理した硫黄修飾金」を「酢酸パラジウムのキシレン溶液」で処理することにより、「硫黄修飾金に担持したパラジウム触媒（Sulfur-modified Au-supported Pd, SAPd）」を得ることに成功している。また、SAPdを用いるとリガンドフリー鈴木―宮浦カップリングやリガンドフリーBuchwald-Hartwig反応が進行すること、SAPdは本カップリング反応に10回以上繰り返し利用可能であること、反応溶液中のパラジウム漏洩量は1 桁～2桁ppbレベルと世界最小レベルであることを見いだしている。 更に、トンネル型走査顕微鏡（TEM）とX線吸収微細構造（XAFS）分析を用いてSAPdの構造解析実験を行い、SAPdは多層状パラジウムナノパーティクル（PdNp、約5 nm）であることが明らかになっている。このような状況下、我々はSAPdが従来に無い２つのユニークな反応場を有していることを見いだした。
１、均一系Pdナノ粒子触媒としてのSAPd Pdクロスカップリング、炭素（sp3およびsp2）－水素結合活性化反応2およびダブルカルボニル化反応3のリガンドフリ－触媒
２、不均一系Pdナノ粒子触媒としてのSAPd アリルエステルのアリル基除去反応、酸化、還元
