Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Area “Chemistry for Multimolecular Crowding Biosystems", which was performed for 5 years from 2017, the
administrative group organized the project according to the plan described in the application form. As a comprehensive judgment, we believe that many researches originally planned has made great progress and has been highly admired by researchers in Japan and overseas. In fact, we received high evaluation in the mid-term evaluation of the area in 2019 (Evaluation: A "Progress as expected is recognized in light of the purpose of setting the research area"). Through our activities in the field, we have opened up new research directions on various issues of multimolecular crowding biosystems that have neither been recognized nor explored well to date, at the world top level.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

細胞を基本単位とする生命システムは、様々な物質(分子)が高濃度雑多に混在する分子夾雑な環境である。これまでそれを無視して、純粋な理想溶液系での生命分子解析や生体機能制御分子の開発が行われてきたため、得られた結果は実際の生命系では適用できないことも多く、大きな壁となってきた。この「分子夾雑」に合成化学、理論・物理化学、分析・応用化学を三つの基軸として取組み、情報科学、工学、薬学、医学など幅広い領域の力を結集して、分野融合的な新学術領域としての“分子夾雑の生命化学”を創成した。今後、分子夾雑環境でこそ機能する新たな分子ツール、解析技術が開拓され、創薬や医療診断を革新すると期待される。
