Outline of Research at the Start

知能とは、広義には環境への適応能力を意味し、単細胞の原生生物とて、数億年にわたる進化の洗練を経て、変動著しい複雑な野外環境でも巧みに行動する能力を有している。例えば、アメーバ状の粘菌は迷路を解いて餌にありつける。本研究では、細胞の環境適応的な行動能力を原生的な知能と位置づけ、広く探索して体系化することを目指す。そのために、原生知能の潜在能力を覚醒させるための新規方法論であるジオラマ行動学を導入し、そのからくりを運動方程式で記述することによって原生知能アルゴリムを捉える。具体的には、精子、繊毛虫、藻類等を取り上げ、環境生態に関わりが深い繁殖や赤潮を主な適用事例とする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

原生生物などの単細胞生物をはじめ、細胞レべルの行動は、変動著しい実環境においてさえ、十分生存できるほどの適応能力を秘めており、しかもその能力は複雑な神経系なしに実装されている。本研究領域では、細胞レべルの適応能力を「原生知能」と位置づけ、広く探索して体系化することを目指す。本年度は、研究計画に沿って、主に以下の成果を得た。
(1) 運営:総括班会議を毎月開催し、領域運営に関する議事を決済するとともに、領域内の研究動向を把握するための意見交換を実施した。また事務局機能を強化するための事務補助員を雇用し、あわせて大学URAの支援をうける体制を維持・強化した。
(2) 研究交流:研究領域の全体会議ならびに若手勉強会(筑波大学下田臨海実験センターにて)を開催した。研究領域を包括する概念化をはかる走性討論会を総括班評価者を招いて開催し、その内容をニューズレターとして領域内で共有した。技術支援・共用化の設備と制度を整備した。特に、レオメータ付き顕微鏡などの最新機器の共用化を実施した。生物試料の野外採集と培養維持管理技術、細胞運動の分析・解析技術、力学モデル化とシミュレーション技術などを介した領域内共同研究が進んだ。
(3) 成果発信:研究領域の活動を国際的に広めるためにパリ大学ブレット教授を招聘して国際研究集会(繊毛虫のジオラマ行動力学)や生物物理学会共催シンポジウム(単細胞の生存戦略)を開催した。学術雑誌に本研究領域に関わる特集号Ethologial Dynamics in Diorama Environmentsを企画し出版した。
(4) 広報:高校生や一般向け講義を実施した。科学技術振興機構主催サイエンスアゴラ2023に出展した。精子、繊毛虫、アメーバなどの研究が、テレビ番組・新聞・webサイトなどで紹介された。領域の活動を、公開ホームポージに約50件の記事として掲載して広報に努めた。

Reason

計画に掲げた項目は概ね予定通りに実施できている。今後注力すべき点は、広く原生知能を探索するために、公募研究と計画研究との連携をさらに促進することだと認識している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

(1) 領域運営のコアとなる「総括班会議」を毎月実施し、運営と領域全体の研究内容について討議する。第2期公募研究を含めた領域の全体会議ならびに国内公開シンポジウムを企画し開催する。第1期ならびに第2期の公募研究と計画研究の連携を促すために、共用化技術の普及を押し進めるとともに技術講習勉強会を開催する。
(2) 総括班評価者をはじめ領域外の専門家と、領域運営と学術的な方向性について意見交換をする討論会を開催し、その内容を領域関係者で共有する。これにより領域全体の包括概念を領域関係者で醸成していく。
(3) 海棲微生物やサンゴ生殖などの研究を強化するために、琉球大学熱帯生物圏研究センターで研究交流会を開催する。実験と理論の共同研究を促進するために領域内の若手勉強会を広島大学にて開催する。
(4) コロナ感染症の社会状況が寛解してきたので、若手の国内、国際短期留学を増やしていく。
(5) 本研究領域の研究思想を広め、新規参入する研究者に学術基盤を提供するため、教科書を出版する。
