Outline of Research at the Start

脳の計算原理を解明し人工知能に実装することは自然科学最大のフロンティアである。脳はどのように外界の生成モデルを獲得し予測や行動を実現しているのだろうか?本領域の目的は、最先端の計測技術を用いて様々な動物の脳から神経細胞の活動を高精度・大規模に取得し、データから生成モデルをリバースエンジニアリングすることで、脳の統一理論を構築・検証し、その神経基盤を解明することである。そのために神経科学と情報工学の融合領域を創成する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

総括班は、「統一理論」領域の目標達成のための共通言語を設定し、各分野にも意義がわかる共通のテーマを明快に示し、計画研究や公募研究をまたがって共同研究を促進するための領域マネジメント行い、新領域の研究を担う若手の育成、女性研究者の支援を図り、生まれた研究成果を広く社会に広め応用につなげることを目的として活動を展開する。
初年度は計画班班員による領域連携体制の構築と、領域目標達成に必要な領域内連携を推進するためのインフラ整備を行った。
1)企画実行委員会:領域会議を4月に東京大学で、11月に沖縄科学技術大学院大学で実施し、計画研究代表者全員による口頭発表や連携に向けた議論を行った。3名の外部評価委員に現地またはオンラインで会議に参加してもらい、活動の進行・達成状況に対して評価や助言を受けた。また公募研究募集に向けた7月の領域説明会や、その他複数の共催イベントを開催し、領域外から多数の参加者があった。
2)育成支援委員会:8月の第46回日本神経科学大会と9月の第33回日本神経回路学会全国大会において、若手向けサテライトシンポジウムを他の脳科学関連の学術変革領域と合同で開催した。講義動画を後日YouTubeに公開した。また多光子励起レーザスキャン顕微鏡を購入して理化学研究所和光キャンパスに設置し、共同設備として運用を開始した。
3)広報連携委員会:4月に領域webページの開設、twitterアカウントの開設、YouTubeチャンネルの開設を行い、情報公開と各種イベントや公募班募集の情報を迅速に発信できる体制を構築した。領域を広く周知するためにロゴを策定した。計画研究代表者の対談の取材を実施し、3月にニュースレターを約300箇所の関連研究室に発行した。

Reason

初年度は、2回の領域会議、領域説明会、サテライトシンポジウム、各種共催イベントを開催し、人的交流や学術的議論を行うとともに、本領域の達成目標を内外に示せたと考えている。また早期にwebページとSNSアカウントを立ち上げ、各種メーリングリストでイベント宣伝を行うなど、領域を広く周知できたと考えている。公募研究には多くの応募があり、今後の領域の活性化が強く期待できる。共用顕微鏡の設置も完了し、順調に運用を開始できている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

次年度4月に公募班16班が領域に加わるため、総括班による連携支援活動を本格化させ領域全体の研究促進を目指す。企画実行委員会は、5月(理研和光キャンパス)と秋頃に領域会議を企画開催し、計画・公募研究についての発表と議論を行い人的交流を図り連携を促進させる。育成支援委員会は、若手向けイベントを開催し、関連分野の若手育成を支援する。共有顕微鏡の運用を本格化させるとともに、技術支援体制や取得実験データ・解析プログラムの共有体制を整備していく。また領域内のラボの間での若手研究者の派遣の支援を進める。広報連携委員会は、領域webページやSNS、ニュースレターを通じて領域の情報を発信する。
