Outline of Final Research Achievements

All proteins in cells are synthesized as nascent polypeptide chains (nascent chains) via a process called translation in the central dogma of biology. The program "nascent chain biology" aims to understand the roles of the nascent chains in the gene expression and cellular homeostasis in this collaborative team. To facilitate the research activity of this program, we supported the following activities: organization of domestic/international meetings, stimulating collaboration, encouraging young researchers and public relations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

全ての生命現象にタンパク質は関わるので、そのタンパク質ができてくる過程(翻訳過程)に未知の生物学があることを明確にして分野を確立した点が、本領域の最も重要な学術的意義と考える。実際、本領域の期間内に翻訳レベルでの遺伝情報の発現制御は従来想定されているよりずっと重要、かつ未開拓であることが認識されるようになった。本領域の基礎研究から有用タンパク質の生産などのバイオテクノロジー、創薬研究など、より応用性の高い研究への橋渡しが始まっており、今後さらなる展開が期待できる。
