Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through field surveys in East Antarctica and various data analyses, this study aimed to improve the accuracy of the GIA (Glacial Isostatic Adjustment) models, which is the response of the solid Earth to ice sheet loading and resulted in to contribute to the integrated studies of ice sheet, ocean, and climate modeling. As a result of the field surveys, absolute gravity measurements were made at several Antarctic stations to obtain reference values for future observations. In addition, GNSS observations revealed current crustal deformation rates, geological and geomorphological surveys the timing of past ice sheet retreatments. These results, together with the satellite data analyses and other modeling studies, expected to contribute the elucidation of the mechanism and future prediction of Antarctic ice sheet changes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
南極での氷床変動、特に最近の氷床融解は、将来の地球環境変動や海面上昇の研究と直結した重要な研究課題である。これらの研究では、近年、衛星観測が大きな役割を果たすようになっているが、そこでの一つの障害は、氷床の荷重変動に対する固体地球の応答であるGIA(氷河性地殻均衡)の不確定性が大きいことである。GIAの精度向上には、南極での現地調査が不可欠であり、本研究では、様々な現地調査を実施することで、GIAの精度向上に寄与した。
