| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order for democracy to actually function as an system, a huge community of "people" or "nation" as the subject of democracy is indispensable. How has the media, which enables us to imagine an imaginary national community in our minds, shaped the memory shared by the people, and Japan's cultural policy in the postwar period? By analyzing dramas and documentaries on colonial rule and war on television and film, and comparing them with those in Europe and with those in China and Korea, it was suggested that a major turning point occurred in the 1970s, and that colonial rule itself needs to be considered in a different context than in Europe.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
複数の国民に関わる歴史的な事象を報道するに際しては、メディアにも正確さ、誠実さの上に、「異論を唱える人々とも相互に承認し合」ってケアする態度が要求される。その上で「人種的民族的偏りや代表性、描かれ方における偏見」に注意し「世界認識の多元性を反映」させるために、日本が何をいかに配慮すべきかを考える材料を提供した。
集団内部で暗黙の内に共有されている無意識の記憶や感情が、今や意識の世界における国内外の政治的紛争と深く関わる構図も提示した。歴史の記憶をめぐっては、人権という規範に対抗して、豊かさや発展に関する記憶が登場して、対抗的な文化が展開されているという図式を提示し、知的対話の基礎とした。
