Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research was conducted to extend the function and elucidate the mechanism of soft crystals, which have properties intermediate between crystals, solids, and liquid crystals. As new soft crystals, we have successfully developed crystals with jumping properties and elucidated their mechanisms upon external stimuli. They also succeeded in developing luminescent amphiphilic dynamic crystals and a luminescent ferroelastic complex crystal with rotational part at the molecular level within the crystal. Furthermore, inspired by the study of soft crystals, wee discovered many new mechanochemical organic synthetic reactions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

新しい材料群の発見は、新しいテクノロジーの発展を促す。例えば1888年の液晶の発見によって、ディスプレイ表示などの技術が生まれ、現在のITを支えている。ソフトクリスタルは、液晶と結晶の中間に位置すると考えられるが、本研究によりその多くのバリエーションの存在とメカニズムが明らかになったことは、将来の新しいテクノロジーの発展に寄与する。また、メカノケミカル合成は、低環境負荷、高反応効率を実現する新しい方法として、これまでの物質生産の方法を一変する可能性を持つ。
