| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Modern urban planning is highly necessary when ancient heritage exists within the urban area, especially when it is inhabited. Multilayered spaces have been formed and inherited in Damascus, Aleppo, and other places. In addition, the traditional technology of oasis water utilization due to the arid region has been kept alive in the modern era. The issue of the neoliberal aspect of urban planning has shed light on the spatial formation not only by (official) urban planning but also by residents, as demonstrated in the case of Beirut. Gentrification and global mobility for management and preservation, which are advancing along with tourism, were also revealed. Long-term trials and errors from physical and chemical methods were made for the conservation of the remains of the Church of St. Simeon in the ancient city of Cappadocia as a case study. We propose an urban planning theory based on the changing "The essence of urban civilization".

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本計画研究は、一連の計画研究の最後（6班）にあって、建築・都市計画、文化人類学、文化財科学という、主として現代の課題や事象を扱う研究者から構成された。考古学や石板文献史学の成果を、なお現代において受け止め、社会に活かしていくことの重要性が確認された。また、これらの知見を震災・戦災からの復興都市計画へと還元することも重要である。これは地域の人々の主体性を尊重した国際協力戦略の形をとる必要があり、本研究で得られた往古の都市文明の成り立ちと現代都市計画への応用に関わる知見と、住民参加、持続可能な発展といった既存の理念を組み合わせることで推進する必要がある。
