Outline of Final Research Achievements

Precise measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters and sensitive search for CP violation have been conducted in the long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment T2K. To improve the performance of the T2K experiment, we have increased the intensity of the neutrino beam to accumulate large amounts of data, estimated the neutrino flux with high precision, accurate measurements of neutrino and nuclear interactions, and advanced neutrino oscillation analysis. Neutrino oscillations analysis was conducted by using 3.8×10^21 protons of neutrino beam data, and θ_23 was measured with an accuracy of ±5%, ranging from 0.46 to 0.491 or 0.526 to 0.578. For CP symmetry violation, the parameter δ_CP was constrained with a significance of 99.7%.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

素粒子、宇宙、ニュートリノの研究は、日本国民の関心が非常に高い基礎科学の研究分野であり、現在も日本の研究者が世界の最先端に立っている。本研究の最大の成果は、世界最高精度でニュートリノ振動パラメータを測定し、ニュートリノによる粒子・反粒子対称性の兆候を捕まえたこと、である。これにより、T2K実験は世界の素粒子と宇宙の研究分野を牽引する重要な役割を担った。本結果は、マスメディアや一般講演で配信することに加え、4コマ漫画で簡易に説明することで、基礎科学の面白さを広く社会に向けて発信した。
