Outline of Research at the Start

台風と爆弾低気圧による被害事例が日本全国広範囲で多発している。両ストームの発達・進路予測の改善、関連するストーム起源の極端現象の発生予測、そして変わりゆく気候環境下で両ストームの活動度がどのように変調するのかを解明する事は減災の観点からも喫緊の課題である。その問題解決に大きな不確実性をもたらしているのが黒潮・黒潮続流が熱・水蒸気供給を介して両ストームに与える影響である。暖水渦のような海洋中規模渦と低気圧の空間規模は1 桁程度異なっており、スケール間大気海洋相互作用の実態は依然として未解明である。そこで本課題では台風と爆弾低気圧の発達プロセスに果たす中緯度大気海洋相互作用の包括的研究を展開する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Using high-resolution numerical models on regional and global scales and various observational data, we clarified (1) the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on intensity changes of tropical cyclones (TCs) under a changing climate, (2) the remote effect of Kuroshio on TC activity, (3) the multiple dynamics during extratropical transition, (4) the remote effect of TCs on Meiyu-Baiu precipitation in Japan, (5) how explosive and binary cyclogenesis are induced over a mid-latitude hotspot, (6) how the surface layers of the ocean respond to TCs and explosive cyclones, and also assessed (7) the long-term variability of TC and explosive cyclone activities.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

熱帯低気圧の強化に寄与する黒潮・メキシコ湾流の遠隔影響を見出し、遠隔海域(特に暖流域)の海面水温の情報も精度が良くなければ、台風の強度予報も十分に改善されないことを指摘する一方、近年の黒潮の高温化が日本に接近する秋台風の強度を強めている可能性を示した。台風の温帯低気圧化の2段階メカニズムや台風の遠隔降水のメカニズムを明らかにし、台風に起因する豪雨予測にも重要な知見を与えた。また、台風の温暖化予測においては、高解像度の大気海洋結合でないと、予測の不確実性を低減することは難しいことを示した。ホットスポット域の二つ玉・爆弾低気圧出現の最適条件を理想化実験から明らかにして本質的理解が大幅に進んだ。
