| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
By adopting the nonhuman primate model of spinal cord injury, aged human and rodents, we examined the hypothesis that hyperadaptation is based on disinhibition of nervous system. We could show that during the recovery of hand functions after subhemisewction cervical spinal cord injury, the interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) between bilateral motor cortices before injury changes to interhemispheric facilitation after the injury, which would contribute to recruitmenting the brain area not used before injury to the recovery process. By using the negartive BOLD in fMRI as an indicator, childs with prominent IHI develops higher level of hand dexterity, while IHI is decreased or diminished in aged people. Fuurther the modulatory mechanisms of IHI was clarified by applying electrophysiology to the cortical circuits in rodents.
