現生人類は、ホモ・サピエンスという単一の生物種でありながら、地球上の様々な自然環境に暮らし、それぞれの地で固有の社会や文化を形作るとともに、極めてバラエティに富む認知・行動能力を有している。こうした人類の認知・行動能力の多様性は、起源地であるアフリカからユーラシアに進出し、さらには南北アメリカやオセアニアにまで拡散した歴史プロセスの中で獲得されたものである。本研究班では、現生人類が移動・拡散する中で新たに進出し居住した極北圏、高緯度地帯、島嶼域、高標高地などの「フロンティア環境」を中心に民族誌調査を行い、そこでどのように適応し生存圏としてのニッチを構築しているか解明を試みる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined adaptabilities of modern humans from bio-physiological to socio-cultural phases for new environments confronted in America and Oceania, as a result of the “Out of Eurasia”. Particularly it elucidated abilities of cognition and behaviors for adapting and expanding to the American continent and Pacific islands. It additionally investigated cognition and behavioral changes caused by modernisation and globalisation. Through these findings, it advanced perspectives and models to interpret formation processes of archaeological materials and genetic traits to other disciplines. Furthermore, international workshops and symposiums were held to present findings of this study worldwide.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究計画班の成果としては、まず従来個別に行われていた人文社会学と自然科学のアプローチを民族誌フィールドにおいて統合し、人間の認知・行動能力の獲得や変容の究明を試みた。またこれに加え、民族誌調査・研究では長らく等閑視されていた、人類史や文明形成という課題を改めて追究する意義と可能性を提示した。これらの成果を踏まえ、学術的な価値にとどまらず、環境変動や技術的特異点などの諸問題に直面するなかで、産業革命以降の西欧近代文明に立脚する人類社会のあり方を再考した。
