垂直方向の視点で捉えられるた国家を水平的なコネクティビティの観点から再考する。具体的には、コネクティビティが国家をいかに支えてきたかを巨大帝国を支えたエリートのネットワークを可視化し、また、国家間のコネクティビティがムスリム社会にもたらしたか、諸国家間の関係とイスラーム共同体との理念との相関を検討する。個別王朝史を越えたイスラーム国家論、歴史的実態に即した新たなイスラーム世界論の構築を目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
During the four-year and three-month period of the project, we held a total of 46 workshops , and organized the first international conference of the Islamic Trust Studies in 2021. By inviting relevant researchers from overseas to engage in discussions, the research project expanded beyond the borders of Japan. As a result, we published the fifth volume of the “Connecting from Islam” series, “Power and Networks,” in 2024. By examining the relationships between premodern states, we constructed a theory of the Islamic state system that transcends individual dynastic histories and a theory of the Islamic world based on historical realities. Additionally, by examining the actual nature of empires, we clarified the relationship between power relations and connectivity. This was achieved through case studies of the Ottoman Empire, the Mughal Empire, and the Russian Empire.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
イスラーム研究はとかく、イスラームに特徴的な事象に注目し、それを強調する傾向がある。もちろん、それには意義があるが、あまりに強調すると、異質性が際立ち、関係諸学問分野の諸原則が適応されない危険性がある。その意味で、本研究はイスラーム国家体系を検討し、さまざまな特徴はあるものの、西欧や他の地域の国家間関係と比較しうることを示した。すなわち、イスラーム国家体系を取り込んだ形で、国際政治史・国際関係史を構築していく必要がある。なぜなら、主権国家体系が最初から西欧の支配・非西欧の排除の論理を隠匿しており、異質性に基づく排除は、開かれた平等な国際関係にはつながらないということが明らかになったからである。
