Outline of Research at the Start

植物にとって部分冠水による低酸素状態や完全冠水による無酸素状態は死に直結する深刻なストレスである。植物は数分から数日の幅で変動する冠水の長さや強度(程度?)に応じて、多段階に通気組織の発達や茎葉伸長を適切に調節する柔軟な応答機構(段階的なステージゲート応答機構)を持ち合わせている。しかし、植物が環境ストレスの時間や強度をどこでどのように受容し複数の応答からどれを選択し発動するのか?は不明である。本課題では、植物の酸素や水分のストレス感受機構と段階的なステージゲート応答の最適な選択機構を明らかにし、植物の冠水に対するレジリエンス機構の解明を目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research has elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying a diverse array of plant responses to flooding. Our investigation provides an overview of key adaptive strategies, including the formation of root aerenchyma, the development of a root oxygen loss barrier, and submergence-dependent stem elongation. Furthermore, we have achieved novel insights into specific mechanisms observed in various plant systems. These include the promotion of internode elongation via red light absorption by anthocyanin accumulation in the leaf sheath of floating rice, the identification of a QTL controlling submergence-dependent stem elongation in African cultivated rice, the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in submergence-dependent hypocotyl elongation in Arabidopsis thaliana, the identification and functional characterization of the gene responsible for the oxygen loss barrier in a wild relative of maize, and the mechanism of submergence-dependent aerenchyma formation in soybean.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

世界的な気象変動による乾燥・水害の深刻化に対し、作物の冠水抵抗性育種が重要です。そのため、植物の耐水性分子メカニズムの理解と鍵遺伝子の特定が不可欠です。本研究では、「研究成果の概要」で示した通り、冠水耐性の鍵遺伝子の同定や分子機構を解明しました。今後、これらの知見に基づき、有用な遺伝子やアリルを活用した育種、ゲノム編集等の先端技術を駆使することで、耐水性作物の開発が可能になります。これらの成果は、将来の食料安定生産に大きく貢献することが期待されます。
