Research Abstract |
We have demonstrated that enhanced production of trans-zeatin is a key factor to facilitate the shoot growth in response to high CO2 condition. IPT3 and CYP735A2 are regulated by CO2 concentration mediated by sugars produced from photosynthesis. We have demonstrated that the physiological function of tZ is distinct from that of iP, and the trans-hydroxylation of cytokinin controls shoot growth in Arabidopsis. We have shown that plants have multiple modes of regulation of de novo cytokinin synthesis in response to nitrogen status: Arabidopsis mainly uses nitrate-specific response system that regulates IPT3, and rice employs multiple IPT genes for nitrogen-dependent cytokinin synthesis, and glutamine metabolism is the signal for the regulation. In both cases, these regulations would be important for root-to-shoot supply of tZ via xylem for regulation of shoot growth.
