Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Sex chromosome turnover, where another autosome becomes a sex chromosome, is more common in frogs. We used two frogs in which sex chromosome turnover is ongoing: Glandirana rugosa, which has both ZW and XY types within the species, and Xenopus tropicalis, which is in transition from a polymorphic state of sex chromosomes to the XY type, we identified the sequences of the sex chromosomes of each species. As a result, we clarified the differences in sex chromosomes between populations and lineages of the two species, and elucidated part of the process of sex chromosome turnover as a mechanism for avoiding sex-loss and its evolutionary background.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
