| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We carried out comparative studies on the results of archaeological investigations on Maya civilization, Teotihuacan, Southeast Mesoamerica and Lower Central America in order to provide and analyze diachronic data on social changes in Mesoamerica based on a refined chronology. In such societies as the Preclassic Maya, Central Mexico and Southeast Mesoamerica, public architectures played a more important role to mobilize societies than writing. In Maya Lowlands and Southeast Mesoamerica, more exclusive ideology developed during the Classic period. In Lower Central America, there was no wiring and big public architectures were never built.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
最近のメソアメリカ考古学研究は、地域・時代毎に専門化・細分化され、地域史を解明する方向に向かっている。国内外においてメソアメリカの比較文明研究はほとんど全く行われていない。本研究は、古代アメリカの比較文明論の文脈の中で中米各地の地域・時代毎の特性や社会変動を通時的に比較研究する我が国初の研究であり、世界的にも未発達な当該研究分野に大きく貢献することが期待される。世界的に稀な一次文明であったメソアメリカ文明の研究は、メソアメリカの諸社会についてだけでなく、人類の文明の起源と形成を知る上で極めて重要な位置を占める。
