This is a program for field research to find the candidate site of the Equatorial Radar in Indonesia, The field research was conducted in cooperation with Indonesian Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPP Teknologi), Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), and Japan-Indonesia Science Technology Forum (JIF).
1. In 19 June-2 July 1989, Kato, Fukao, Sumi, Tsuda, Yamanaka, and Nakamura visited Indonesia to find the candidate site of the Equatorial Radar. Following the results of the Pre-survey (22-26 June) operated by BPPT, LAPAN, and JIF, they visited the candidate sites near Padang and Bukittinggi in West Sumatera. They found a good candidate place at Kototabang which is 19 km north west of Bukittinggi. the meteorological observations and the measurements of the radio noise were operated for several days as an environment research in the dry season.
2. Tsuda and Nakamura visited the candidate site near Bukittinggi in 25 July-1 August for the environmental research. They operated the radio noise measurement for 65 hours, and found that the radio environment is suitable for the radar except for the noise generated by thunders.
3. Fukao visited Jakarta in 9-15 September, and discussed the results of field research near Bukittinggi with BPPT and LAPAN.
4. Fukao, Tsuda, Yamanaka, Yamamoto, Hirota, Fukunishi, Tanaka, and Kondo visited Bukittinggi in 27 September-17 October, and checked the environment in the rainy season. Yamanaka and Yamamoto operated the meteorological observations and radio noise measurements. They found that the candidate site is in good condition even in the rainy season.
The results of this program were published as "Proposal for the Establishment of the Equatorial Radar in the Indonesian Region". Some small articles are published in "Tenki", the journal (Japanese) of the Meteorological Society of Japan (Yamanaka and Nakamura, 1989, Vol.35, p.650; Yamanaka etal., 1990, in press).
