Research Abstract |
(1) I did collation between Faulkner's manuscripts of Unpublished Stories and several published stories and novels. Thus, I traced the process of the making of Absalom, Absalom!, the Snopes trilogy and Sartoris. (2) On the basis of some parts of my research, I gave a lecture of A STUDY OF FAULKNER, at Faculty of Letters of University of Tokyo for two years (1989-1991). (3) I translated Faulkner's unpublished stories, including "As I Lay Dying"(which has never printed in the United States). The translation is to be published by Fuzanbo as No. 26 volume in a complete set of Japanese translation of William Faulkner's works. (4) As one of editors with Professor Michel Gresset of University of Paris, Professor Noel Polk of University of Southern Mississippi and Professor Kenzaburo Ohashi, I worked to publish an International Faulkner journal, Faulkner Studies (Vol. 1, No. 1) through Yamaguchi Publishing House. Now, Vol. 1, No. 2. is under way. (5) I did the radio lecture on Faulkner's Short Stories at NHK from November, 1991 till February, 1992. I talked about "A Rose For Emily. " "Barn Burning, " "That Evening Sun, " and "Red Leaves. " This lecture is to be published in a book form. (6) My essay, "Faulkner and History : As I Lay Dying and The Scarlet Letter" was translated into Chinese by Professor Liu Jie of Mianyang Teacher's College in People's Republic of China and was included in Journal of Mianyang Teacher's College (Social Sciences Edition, No. l : January, 1991). (7) My essay, "The McCaslin's Grievous Legacy, , was included in 'Critical Essays On William Faulkner : The McCaslin Family, edited by Professor Arthur Kinney, which was published by G. K. Hall in 1990. It is for the first time that a Japanese scholar's essay has ever included in this series.
