From April to May in 1990 we consulted with Prof. David O. Mills (University of Pittsburgh) and selected the text "Mechatronics" (Iwanami Microectronics No. 11) for a computer-assisted reading system using the reading materials used on the M. I. T. Summer Intensive Technical Japanese Course and studied that text.
Next, we made a teaching plan for the experimental class conducted on the M. I. T. Summer Intensive Technical Japanese Course and sent two teachers in order to make a video tape of the experimental class from the 17th to the 28th of July.
At the same time, there was a request from M. I. T. side that they needed a resource person for science and technology ; we sent Assistant Professor Yamamoto to M. I. T. from the 23rd June to the 28th of July. As a result, he achieved the important effect of realizing a team-teaching set-up between a Japanese language teacher and a scientist, and research into teaching methods for such a class.
We analyzed the video tape of experimental class by
using stimulated recall. We also invited Prof. Michio Tsutsui of M. I. T. and Prof. Kazumi Hatasa of Purdue University to attend a conference from the 29th of October to the 2nd of November. In this conference, which included two cooperative investigators, we discussed a detailed list of instructions, technical limits and the potential of the CAI system on the Macintosh computer. In order to realize a test version of a computer-assisted reading comprehension system, it was proposed to ask Prof. A. A. Maciejewski's assistance because he had already been working on another type of reading comprehension system on the Macintosh. The outline of our system is as follows :
The introduction part is for giving an active image of and some background knowledge about the text. In the second section, a student can read through the text by looking up items in the dictionary. By using Maciewski's system, students can consult not only a kanji dictionary but also a Japanese-English dictionary and a grammar dictionary, which is more effective than using a vocabulary list. A small test will be given after the first paragraph and the student's 'ability' can be decided from that result and the student's own report. After the second paragraph, the system asks questions according to the ability of the student ; this point is radically different from other systems. In the last section, there are check tests and exercises for areas where the student is weak.
In December 26th 1990, a technical meeting on the reading comprehension system took place, and in January 23rd 1991 a meeting aiming the textbook examination were held.
From February 1 to February 11, 1991 we invited Prof. Hatasa and Prof. Maciejewski to the University of Tsukuba and started working on an improved version of our system.
