The first school which we visited in the United States was the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UCSD. We discussed with Prof. Chalmers Johnson who is very famous as revisionist. He is a smart analyst and critic, in reference to statistio. Next, we discussed Prof. Krause, L., who was an Economic adviser to the Carter Administration and Prof. Macmilan, J., who is a professor of negotiation. Prof. Macmilan has a good reputation among his students. He has much a great contribution to the development of negotiation theory. He was very interested in our academic studies of negotiation. The second school was Harvard University. We talked about publishing the Japanese version of "Negotiation Journal" with Prof J. Z. Rubin, who is the editor of the journal. We are sure that it is very informative to Japanese readers. Prof. Rubin said we are ready to publish a book including good papers from the journal." The book will be translated into Japanese by the end of this
year by us. Prof. Rubin introduced us to Prof. Jeswald W. Salacuse who is Dean of Fletcher School at Tuft University. Prof. Rubin and Prof. Salacuse have started the Course on negotiation, whish is v
ery high in the academic sense.
We departed saying "Let us keep a continuous contact with each other in negotiation studies".
Next, we met Prof. Raiffa of Harvard Graduate School of Business, who is one of the leaders of negotiation study in the world. He is also an adviser of Japan Institute of Negotiation. There, Fujita is president, Doi is one the vice presidents, and Ohnari is a director. On this visit he kindly gave us valuable information on negotiation study. Especialy the following was very useful and inspired us : IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) has been studying negotiation as one of its projects. The project is called PIN (Process of International Negotiation). The result of PIN was published just a week ago before our visit. He showed the book "International Negotiation" and explained how PIN had been doing its project. Immediately getting the book, and investigated, we found that PIN's way of negotiation study was very similar to our study plan. So we convinced our plan was right and thought doing our best to make our idea concrete. We had a plan to visit IIASA on this trip, but we could not get information about negotiation study more than this recently published book.
After visiting to Harvard, we flied for Geneva Switzerland. There, we went to the Center for Advanced Studies in International Negotiation and met Dr. J. Freymond, who is the head of the Center. He is also the president of the Society of Political Science in Switzerland. He explained us the activities of the Center and the study style of negotiation, and he wanted to costudy with us. He is one of the a leaders of negotiation study in Europe, so we have a plan to invite him to Japan in 1991, and to make the co-study plan concrete.
Finally we sat on a next seat of Mr. Soli Simelane, the U. N. Deputy representative of ANC. We insisted that we should resolve racial conflict by negotiation. He agreed our assertion, and he would be able to introduce us to Mr. Nelson Mandera.
We felt the grace of God, helping our study.
IIASA(International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis)は日本政府も参加している国際機関である。数年来,ここでPIN(Prosess of Internationl Negotiation)プロジェクトがある事は以前ライファ教授に教えられていた。
